ULI Washington & Baltimore Joint Service Opportunity
Urban Agriculture with 11th Street Bridge Park Plots
Join ULI Washington and ULI Baltimore for a fall service event with the 11th Street Bridge Park Plots on Saturday, September 22nd from 9am to 1pm. The 11th Street Bridge Park Plots is a project that engages houses of worship, nonprofits and other organizations in growing food to promote healthy communities that can live and thrive in place. Three years ago the Bridge Park Plots popped up in Ward 6 and 8 in order to address the food insecurity that occurred in these neighborhoods. In the past three years, they have grown over 10,000 pounds of food between six sites and a larger training farm.
The Park Plot we will be volunteering at is Wayne Place, a transitional housing complex for foster youth who have aged out of the foster care system. These housing units are set up to provide constituents with life skills over the 18-month housing program. The site was established in 2016 and in their inaugural year grew a few hundred pounds of food. The farm has proven to be a great respite for residents living there who face many challenges.
We will convene at 9am at the site (located at the corner of Mississippi Ave. SE & Wayne Pl. SE) to do a quick introduction before splitting up into smaller working groups. We will be doing basic garden maintenance tasks such as weeding, bed repair, planting cover crops, and other general site maintenance and beautification. Please come in clothes you do not mind getting dirty and bring water bottles or garden gloves if you have them. If not, water, gloves and other equipment will be provided. The 11th Street Bridge Park will be providing lunch and a DJ to keep us motivated throughout the event!
Thank you to the ULI Washington Young Leaders Group Community Service Committee for organizing this event! We are excited to partner with ULI Baltimore on two service projects this fall. Be on the lookout for another joint service opportunity in Baltimore coming soon.
Please RSVP to Emily.Weberman@uli.org by Monday, September 10th so that we may provide a list of volunteers to the 11th Street Bridge Park.
Street Parking is available.
The site is about 1.5 miles from the Congress Heights Metro stop (Green Line). In your RSVP please indicate if you will need a ride from the Congress Heights Metro stop, or if you are able to pick up volunteers from the metro. It is also accessible by bus, nearby bus stops include Mississippi Ave. & Wayne Pl.; Atlantic St. & First St.
