Kim McCalla was recently appointed to Vice President from Associate Vice President of Facilities, Design and Construction for Morgan State University.
Ms. McCalla started with Morgan November 2008 with many years of experience as an Owner’s Representative managing large, complicated, and award winning projects from Oriole Park at Camden Yards, the Baltimore Convention Center Expansion Phase III, Comcast Center at the University of Maryland and the National Aquarium in Baltimore's Australian Exhibit to the award winning projects on Morgan’s Campus.
Ms. McCalla currently oversees three departments on the Morgan State University campus: University Planning, Design and Construction Management and the Physical Plant, consisting of approximately 150-175 people. She is responsible for 56 buildings, 172 acres and the infrastructure of campus. Morgan State University is a Carnegie-classified high research institution and Maryland’s preeminent Public Urban Research University with 9,101 students and 140 academic programs.
Ms. McCalla is leading the next generation of expansion and transformation of the Morgan campus. This transformation includes renovations of the historic buildings on the Academic Quad, construction of new facilities that are contemporary, aesthetically notable and are representative of new educational pedagogies and the acquisition of land to allow for future expansion. In 2016 the entire campus was honored by the National Historic Trust and named a National Treasure and in 2017 the University was designated as the State of Maryland’s Preeminent Urban Public Research University.
The newest buildings in this transformation include a new Tyler Hall a Student Services Building (opened 2020) and our third LEED Gold building, the development of the West Campus including the Jenkins Hall Behavioral and Social Sciences building, the Earl G. Graves School of Business and Management building, a “quad”, and a 600 plus foot gateway pedestrian bridge. Other recent projects include the award winning Center for Built Environment and Infrastructure Studies, and the Lillie Carroll Jackson Museum, as well as many renovations to existing buildings. Tyler Hall will be, followed by our next major buildings: Health and Human Services, a new Natural Sciences Center for Biology and Chemistry, new and renovated housing and infrastructure improvements. With these major buildings, the gateways to campus are being redefined.
In her spare time Ms. McCalla guest lectures for the School of Architecture and Planning for their Architecture and Construction Management Programs for undergraduates and for the School of Business Management’s Project Management program at the graduate level. She is a board member the University’s Construction Management Board, and regularly volunteers with the Block Kids program as a judge. On occasion, Ms. McCalla is also called upon to participate as a panelist with various groups of the design and construction industry. Ms. McCalla a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and in 2016 received the Black Engineer of the Year Presidents’ Award. Ms. McCalla is honored and humbled for this recognition, is a 2021 graduate from Leadership Maryland and was recently noted in the Baltimore Business Journal’s Women’s Month Spot Light, American Builder’s Quarterly, DDC Journal and Engineering News Record.
