    Powerhouse Women in Higher Education in Baltimore

    Join ULI’s Women’s Leadership Initiative for our 8th annual Speaker Dinner Series at La Scala restaurant. The evening will include networking, a seated dinner, and a moderated discussion featuring three women in decision-making positions at Morgan State, Stevenson University and Johns Hopkins. Spend the evening with friends and colleagues and be inspired by the journeys these women have taken to get to where they are today. This event is the highlight of our local WLI event calendar and is a great opportunity to connect with your peers who help transform and envision the Baltimore community.

    Johns Hopkins University

    Coretta L. Bennett Director of Operations, Design & Construction Coretta Bennett joined Johns Hopkins University Facilities & Real Estate as the first Director of Operations, Design & Construction in January 2020. In addition to providing leadership and management for design and construction activities, she champions excellence around collaboration, systems, processes, procedures and customer service. She has a diverse background with over 24 years of experience in operations, construction, sustainability, and renewable energy. A native of Baltimore, she is a graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, Morgan State University’s Civil Engineering program and also earned a Master’s of Business Administration from Rutgers University. Additionally, Mrs. Bennett holds the designation of LEED AP, BD+C. Coretta also embraces her participation in community and employment engagement initiatives such as United Way of Central Maryland, ACE Mentor Program of Baltimore and serves as an executive board member with The Chesapeake Bay Trust. For over a decade, she has volunteered and lectured at her alma mater, Morgan State University within the School of Architecture + Planning’s Construction Management Program. Coretta resides in Howard County with her spouse and is the proud mother of 3 children. She makes time to enjoy exercising, gardening, movies and spending time with her community group.

    Assedo Consulting

    Ms. Phillip, President and CEO of Assedo Consulting, is an engineer and transportation professional with 24 years of experience serving clients in the public and private sectors. Her work educates stakeholders, appointed and elected government officials, and communities on the impacts of engineering, transportation, and construction projects. In 2012, Ms. Phillip founded Assedo Consulting, LLC, a certified African-American, woman-owned business enterprise (MBE/WBE). Assedo Consulting provides planning and public outreach services for projects in the planning, design and construction phases of development. Over her career, Ms. Phillip has developed, implemented and overseen public outreach programs for many government and private sector agencies and consulting firms. Ms. Phillip serves on the WTS International Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee and is a sitting Director on the WTS Foundation Board, which is responsible for scholarships, research, and training for college students and young professionals. Odessa is President of the Maryland Chapter of the Council of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO). COMTO’s mission is to ensure opportunities and maximum participation in the transportation industry for minority individuals, veterans, people with disabilities and certified small, minority owned businesses. Ms. Phillip has worked as an adjunct professor in the Civil Engineering Department at Howard University and sits on the Advisory Board for the Department.     Kim McCalla

    Associate Vice President, Facilities, Design & Construction Management, Morgan State University

    Kim McCalla was recently appointed to Vice President from Associate Vice President of Facilities, Design and Construction for Morgan State University. Ms. McCalla started with Morgan November 2008 with many years of experience as an Owner’s Representative managing large, complicated, and award winning projects from Oriole Park at Camden Yards, the Baltimore Convention Center Expansion Phase III, Comcast Center at the University of Maryland and the National Aquarium in Baltimore's Australian Exhibit to the award winning projects on Morgan’s Campus. Ms. McCalla currently oversees three departments on the Morgan State University campus: University Planning, Design and Construction Management and the Physical Plant, consisting of approximately 150-175 people. She is responsible for 56 buildings, 172 acres and the infrastructure of campus. Morgan State University is a Carnegie-classified high research institution and Maryland’s preeminent Public Urban Research University with 9,101 students and 140 academic programs. Ms. McCalla is leading the next generation of expansion and transformation of the Morgan campus. This transformation includes renovations of the historic buildings on the Academic Quad, construction of new facilities that are contemporary, aesthetically notable and are representative of new educational pedagogies and the acquisition of land to allow for future expansion. In 2016 the entire campus was honored by the National Historic Trust and named a National Treasure and in 2017 the University was designated as the State of Maryland’s Preeminent Urban Public Research University. The newest buildings in this transformation include a new Tyler Hall a Student Services Building (opened 2020) and our third LEED Gold building, the development of the West Campus including the Jenkins Hall Behavioral and Social Sciences building, the Earl G. Graves School of Business and Management building, a “quad”, and a 600 plus foot gateway pedestrian bridge. Other recent projects include the award winning Center for Built Environment and Infrastructure Studies, and the Lillie Carroll Jackson Museum, as well as many renovations to existing buildings. Tyler Hall will be, followed by our next major buildings: Health and Human Services, a new Natural Sciences Center for Biology and Chemistry, new and renovated housing and infrastructure improvements. With these major buildings, the gateways to campus are being redefined. In her spare time Ms. McCalla guest lectures for the School of Architecture and Planning for their Architecture and Construction Management Programs for undergraduates and for the School of Business Management’s Project Management program at the graduate level. She is a board member the University’s Construction Management Board, and regularly volunteers with the Block Kids program as a judge. On occasion, Ms. McCalla is also called upon to participate as a panelist with various groups of the design and construction industry. Ms. McCalla a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and in 2016 received the Black Engineer of the Year Presidents’ Award. Ms. McCalla is honored and humbled for this recognition, is a 2021 graduate from Leadership Maryland and was recently noted in the Baltimore Business Journal’s Women’s Month Spot Light, American Builder’s Quarterly, DDC Journal and Engineering News Record.

    Melanie Edmonson

    Vice President for Administration and Finance and Chief Financial Officer, Stevenson University

    Melanie Edmonson, Vice President for Administration and Finance and Chief Financial Officer. Ms. Edmonson has served as the Vice President of Finance and Administration as well as Chief Financial Officer for Stevenson University since August 2020. Prior to this role, Ms. Edmonson was the Associate Vice President for Financial Affairs and Controller since 1996. As Vice President for Administration and Finance/CFO, Ms. Edmonson is responsible for all the company’s financial functions including accounting, audit, budget, treasury, and corporate finance. She also oversees and manages construction administration, facilities, campus safety, transportation, athletics, auxiliary services, information technology, and conference services. Prior to joining Stevenson in 1996, Ms. Edmonson also held positions as Financial Systems Manager and General Accounting Manager for United Press International and The Presidio Corporation, respectively. Ms. Edmonson holds a B.A. in Finance from Florida Institute of Technology and is a certified public accountant.
